TP-Link Archer AX73 WiFi 6 Router
4.2
Image: TP-Link
The AX73 is a reliable workhorse WiFi 6 router commonly used as the “real” router behind a T-Mobile or Verizon gateway set to bridge mode. Carrier gateways typically have mediocre WiFi coverage — swap in the AX73 (or any modern WiFi 6 router) and coverage, roaming, and advanced features dramatically improve.
Setup note: put your carrier gateway into bridge mode, connect its Ethernet port to the AX73’s WAN port, and disable the gateway’s WiFi. You now have a proper home network running behind your 5G connection.
Pros
- Strong value WiFi 6 router — 5400Mbps total capacity
- 6 high-gain antennas for large homes
- Advanced QoS and OpenVPN server
- Easy to put T-Mobile/Verizon gateway in bridge mode behind it
Cons
- No WiFi 6E — stuck on 2.4/5GHz bands
- Firmware has had security issues historically
- No multi-gig WAN port (1Gbps max)
