The Wavemaker FX3000 is the indoor equivalent of the outdoor CPE category — an unlocked 5G modem/router that you place indoors, wire to an external antenna on the roof via LMR-400 coax, and plug a SIM into. It’s the preferred pick for people who want full admin-level visibility into RF performance without installing an outdoor unit.

Compared to outdoor CPE: the FX3000 has more admin UI depth and easier maintenance (it’s inside), but you lose the coax-loss advantage of mounting the modem at the antenna. For cable runs under 30ft of LMR-400, the loss is minimal and the indoor location is worth it.

SIM compatibility: AT&T is the friendliest to third-party modems on consumer plans. T-Mobile and Verizon both have TOS language that can flag non-approved devices, though enforcement is inconsistent. Some users run a T-Mobile Away (business) SIM to avoid issues.

If you want the RF data depth of a Peplink/Cradlepoint without the enterprise complexity, this is the sweet spot.

Pros
  • Four external antenna ports (SMA-F) for serious 4x4 MIMO
  • Carrier-unlocked — works across all US carriers with appropriate SIM
  • Extensive admin UI with detailed RF metrics (RSRP, RSRQ, SINR, CQI)
  • Supports carrier aggregation across multiple bands
  • Inseego Connect cloud management for remote monitoring
Cons
  • Premium price ($699)
  • Not every consumer carrier plan allows SIMs in third-party modems — check TOS
  • No 5G mmWave support
