Starlink Gen 3 Standard Kit

4.6

The Gen 3 kit is Starlink’s current standard hardware — what you get with any new Residential, Roam, or Business signup (unless you specifically order a Mini or High Performance unit). It’s the most refined version of the consumer Starlink hardware: lighter dish, integrated WiFi 6 router, real Ethernet port.

For Roam / RV users: the Gen 3 kit works fine at stationary sites with a clear sky view. For truly mobile use (moving while on), the Starlink Mini is the portable version. For full-time motion, Flat High Performance is the motion-rated option.

Off-grid / solar setups: the stock Gen 3 runs on AC, pulling ~50-75W continuous. The DC power conversion kit sold separately enables 12V/24V DC input for solar / battery systems, which is essential for off-grid installs.

Compared to 5G fixed wireless: Starlink wins on coverage (works anywhere with sky view) but costs more monthly and has more variable latency. In areas where 5G home internet is available, 5G is usually cheaper and faster. In rural areas without cellular coverage, Starlink is often the only real option.

Pros
  • Unified dish + router unit — simpler install than Gen 2
  • Ethernet port built into the router (no $25 adapter needed)
  • WiFi 6 dual-band mesh-compatible router
  • Dish is lighter and less visually intrusive than Gen 2
  • Improved low-angle performance (works in partially obstructed sky conditions)
Cons
  • $599 upfront for most Residential signups (sometimes promoted to $349)
  • Locked to Starlink network — not a cellular modem
  • Uses the Starlink power standard; no easy DC/off-grid setup without the add-on kit
  • Single Ethernet port — you'll want a switch for wired networks
